The Federal Government has spent $14.5 million in expanding the capabilities of the Australian Crime Commission.

The Fusion Centre was launched by Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland and Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor today. Its aim is to assist law enforcement agencies in the prevention and detection of organised crime, and it will operate within the Crime Commission.

The Government estimates that organised crime costs taxpayers around $15 billion each year.

People smuggling, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, illegal financial transfers, fraud and identity crimes will be targeted.
