The co-head of Clayton Utz's climate change and sustainability practice has been appointed as an initial board member for the new national Carbon Market Institute.
From 1 January 2011, the Melbourne-based institute will operate as an independent not-for-profit national body with strategic national and international partnerships and affiliations.
Those joining Bateman on the board include AGL director Les Hosking, Asia-Pacific Emissions Trading Forum chairman Tony Beck, ClimateWorks Australia executive director Anna Skarbek and Alstom vice president and former Australian Greenhouse Office chief executive officer, Gwen Andrews.
"It is a privilege to be part of Australia's first institute specifically created to assist businesses to effectively prepare for a carbon constrained future," said Bateman.
Speaking at the Carbon Expo Australasia 2010 last week (14 October), Financial Services Minister John Lenders said the new initiative would give Melbourne the advantage to become a major centre for carbon market business in the Asia-Pacific region.
