The health and wellbeing of legal professionals will be a major focus for the Law Society of South Australia's incoming president Ralph Bönig, who started his 12 month term this week.
"The legal system is complex and can be intimidating and daunting for those who come into contact with it. Improving people's access to the legal system, their understanding of it and the transparency of its operation are important to ensure the public's confidence in it" Bönig said.
"The wellbeing of the legal profession is another subject which is close to my heart. I am genuinely concerned about the increasing pressure on practitioners at all levels. Health issues are taking an unacceptable toll on a number of members of our profession," he said.
Bönig founded the firm Fountain & Bönig in 1993 with partner John Fountain and has specialised in the areas of professional indemnity insurance, medical malpractice and public liability for more than 20 years.
His appointment as president follows a number of years of extensive involvement in the Society's activities including chair of the committee reviewing the proposed national legal profession reform.
