The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has launched a pilot program of Saturday morning hearings in the City of Hume.

The Saturday morning hearings are aimed at helping time-poor Melbournians who are unable to attend hearings during weekdays.

The new initiative kicked-off at the Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows on 23 October as part of Transforming VCAT - a three-year strategic plan to bring VCAT closer to the community.

"Like the twilight sittings that currently run at the Neighbourhood Justice Centre in Collingwood, sitting outside of business hours gives more options to people wanting to access VCAT," Justice Ross said. "At its heart, Transforming VCAT is about improving access to justice for all Victorians."

Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls noted that a significant proportion of the parties who attended VCAT live in our metropolitan areas.

"Having VCAT available to hear their cases closer to home and at more flexible times allows more people to access its services," Hulls said. "The option of a metropolitan hub close to community legal centres, public transport, justice service centres and businesses will increase the convenience for people wanting to access VCAT, as will the option of weekend sittings."
