Leading members of Sydney's legal and business communities gathered last night (18 November) to attend the 9th annual International Arbitration lecture at the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

International arbitrator, mediator and lawyer Sally Harpole delivered this year's lecture, highlighting the development of an emerging arbitration culture in the Asia-Pacific and sharing her perspective on the issue of language in Asian arbitration as well as the preference for institutional over ad hoc arbitration in China.

Amongst the attendees were members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, academics, corporate multinationals, organisations with foreign interests and law students.

The national head of Clayton Utz's international arbitration practice and president of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, Professor Doug Jones AM, said the lecture remained a significant event in the global international arbitration calendar and reflected Australia's position in leading debate and thought leadership in the area.

"The annual International Arbitration lecture continues to play an important role in promoting and supporting the development and study of international arbitration and international dispute resolution in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region," he said.

Clayton Utz hosted the lecture, in conjunction with the University of Sydney.
