A corporate group conference in Sydney this weekend will provide some welcome respite for lawyers from the Tokyo office of Blake Dawson.

The firm has five lawyers in Tokyo, with most of them leaving Japan to fly to the conference tonight. It is expected that most of the firm's staff in Tokyo will then work remotely from either Blake Dawson's Sydney or Melbourne office before it is deemed safe to return to the city.

Australian foreign minister Kevin Rudd has recommended that Australians in Tokyo leave the city in the wake of the radiation threat posed by the failed reactors in Fukushima, around 250 kilometres south of Tokyo.

Numerous international law firms in Tokyo have taken the precaution of relocating staff to other areas of Japan or to international offices in the past few days.
