THE FIRST stage of an $11.4 million project that will see a new “state-of-the-art” judicial centre in Mackay, Queensland, has been completed and officially opened by Attorney General Rod Welford.

The new extension features four courtrooms, jury facilities, and judicial chambers and “is more than just bricks and mortar — it is bringing to Mackay all the elements of a modern judicial system”, Welford said.

Previously, there were no interview room facilities and privacy for victims and witnesses was limited. But the new developments include two new magistrates courts, new courtrooms for sittings of the Supreme and District Courts, new interview and witness rooms, a jury assembly room and areas for court support groups and improved public waiting areas.

“These facilities will not only benefit victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, but enable lawyers to speak with their clients privately and discreetly,” Welford said.

Admitting it had been a very exciting project for the region, member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said there had been extensive consultation between the Department of Justice and the Attorney General, the Queensland police, magistrates and members of the judiciary, as well as Mackay Mayor Julie Boyd.
