Barrister Stephen McLeish SC has been appointed as Victoria's new Solicitor-General, replacing Pamela Tate SC who is now a Court of Appeal judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria.

An expert in constitutional law, McLeish completed a Master of Laws at Harvard in 1991 and signed the Bar Roll in 1993. He has appeared regularly in the High Court of Australia and other courts.

Formerly an associate to Chief Justice Mason of the High Court and a solicitor for Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks, McLeish has been published in the areas of public and corporate law and has served on numerous Victorian Bar committees, including the Human Rights Committee.

"I congratulate Mr McLeish on his appointment and also congratulate the Victorian Government on the decision to appoint Mr McLeish who is an outstanding lawyer," said chairman of the Victorian Bar Mark Moshinsky SC.
