The lawyers who worked to revise Scott Rush's death penalty should be applauded for their tireless campaign against capital punishment, according to the Law Council of Australia.

The death penalty handed down to Rush in 2006, following his drug trafficking conviction in Bali, was revised to a life sentence on Tuesday (12 May) by the Indonesian Supreme Court.

According to LCA president Alexander Ward, the decision is welcome but should not detract from the fact that other Australian members of the so-called "Bali Nine", including Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, still face the firing squad in Indonesia.

"The Law Council strongly opposes the death penalty," he said in a statement released Wednesday (12 May). "It is the position of the Law Council that no person should be subjected to the death penalty irrespective of their nationality, the nature of the crime they are alleged to have committed or the time and place of its alleged commission.

"The Law Council applauds the Australian lawyers who gave tirelessly of their time and expertise to work with Rush's Indonesian legal team to secure this outcome."
