Lawyers are obliged to continue providing - and increase the amount of - pro bono legal work in order to provide access to justice for all members of the community, the president of the Australia's largest Law Society said today.

As Law Week kicked off in capital cities around Australia, NSW Law Society president Stuart Westgarth also said existing pro bono work is making a difference to marginalised members of the community.

"Pro bono work is an important service that the legal profession can provide to the community," Westgarth said.

According to the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics survey of pro bono work, Australian lawyers undertook 955,400 hours of pro bono work in 2007/08 at an estimated value of $238.2 million.
