IN THE FACE of sustained calls for lawyers to embrace better work life balance, a record number of firms were last week recognised for outstanding efforts in people management.

Mid-tier firms Sparke Helmore, Shine Roche McGowan (SRM) and Henry Davis York (HDY) all secured finals spots at this week's Australian 2003 HR Awards. It is the first time in the event's three-year history that more than one law firm has ever been represented alongside companies from the wider business community.

After winning the ‘Employer of Choice’ category at this year’s Fuji Xerox Australian Law Awards, HDY now find itself up against wider competition from Adeco, Mounties, Nokia and SC Johnson to claim the overall prize.

The Sydney-based firm also secured itself a spot in the final field for ‘Best Attraction and Retention Strategy’. Sparkes and SRM will go head-to-head in the ‘Employer Branding’ category.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony, to be attended by more than 600 people, at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel on 17 October.
