Victorian Supreme Court judge Kevin Bell and a line-up of human rights law experts will examine the state's Human Rights Charter as well as privacy and free speech issues at a conference this Friday (28 October).

Providing the keynote address at the Law Institute of Victoria's (LIV) Human Rights and Administrative Law Conference, Justice Bell - an advocate for human rights charters at the state and federal level - will explore Victoria's Charter with reference to jurisprudential developments.

Other speakers at the conference include Dr Mark McMillan from Melbourne Law School, who will discuss constitutional law and Indigenous Australians; Vanessa Zimmerman, a legal adviser to the UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, who will examine corporate activities and human rights; and Charlie Powles, a member of the Migration Review and Refugee Review Tribunals who will look at decision-making by public decision-makers.

The conference will also include a panel discussion on privacy and free speech issues following the closure of News of the World.

Opened by LIV president-elect Michael Holcroft, the conference will be held at the Novotel Melbourne.
