A new merger for Norton Rose Group has seen the firm enter Latin America and Central Asia for the first time.

Effective from 1 January, the merger with Canadian firm Macleod Dixon, which has created Norton Rose Canada (NRC), means thefirm has gained offices in Caracas in Venezuela, Bogotá in Colombia and Almaty in Kazakhstan.

NRG’s chief executive, Peter Martyr, said the merger delivers “real strength in energy and mining in emerging markets”.

The merger also grows the group’s existing Russian practice to 40 lawyers, and significantly bolsters the firm’s Canadian practice.

With nearly 700 lawyers now based in Calgary, Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa and Québec, John Coleman, the managing partner of NRC, said the firm is a “new Canadian powerhouse”.

“I believe this changes the legal landscape in Canada,” he said. “We will have unmatched strength and reach in the mining and energy business in Canada.”

NRC integration partner and managing partner of Macleod Dixon Bill Tuer said “there is a strong global focus on western Canada and, more than ever, investment is flowing into and out of the region”.
