MORE THAN 250 skiers and snowboarders are expected to descend upon the slopes of Thredbo on the weekend of 4 and 5 August for the annual Volvo Lawyers Ski and Snowboard Races.

Now in its 17th year, this year’s race format is the same as in previous years, being a dual slalom course for both skiers and snowboarders, run on the Rossignol Racecourse. The course is suitable for skiers and boarders of all standards, and race prizes are awarded across the spectrum to encourage participation by beginners and intermediates.

The competition has previously seen such competition as bronze medallist Zali Steggall, who won the gong in slalom at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. That year she raced to victory in the Volvo Lawyers Ski Race, narrowly beating past winner Caroline Sweeney of Mallesons Stephen Jaques and Andrew Wallis, of PwC Legal, who took third place.

The 16th running of the event coincided with the Athens Olympics and acquired some Olympic spirit of its own with the late entry of Steggall. The law student and paralegal also won the slalom at the 1999 World Skiing Championships.

The event culminates in a post-race gala dinner, at which attendees will be eligible for a North American ski holiday, as well as other holidays, prizes and equipment provided by the event’s sponsors. Further information and entry forms are available on the event’s web site at www.lawski.com.au.
