Partner Adam Stevens leads Moray & Agnew’s health law practice in Victoria, and is recognised for his technical excellence, strategic leadership and ability to build high-performing teams that deliver strong client outcomes. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and exceptional impact in the health law jurisdiction, he has been named as a Finalist for Health Partner of the Year in the Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards 2026.
My legal career has been shaped by an unwavering focus on complex insurance and health-related disputes, where technical expertise, strategic judgment and commercial awareness are critical. Early in my practice, I was drawn to matters involving significant clinical, regulatory and reputational considerations, and to working with clients operating in highly scrutinised environments.
Over time, that work naturally evolved into broader leadership responsibilities. I developed a strong interest not only in achieving successful outcomes on individual matters, but in building and leading specialist teams capable of supporting clients across entire portfolios of work. That progression led to senior roles and, most recently, to a partnership role establishing and growing a leading health law practice within Moray & Agnew’s Melbourne office.
That path has allowed me to combine hands-on legal work with strategic practice development, team leadership and client relationship management, all of which I enjoy in my role today.
What continues to motivate me is the opportunity to work with clients facing complex, high-risk challenges, often in circumstances where the stakes extend well beyond the immediate dispute. Supporting insurers, health services and institutions and health practitioners through those challenges requires trusted advice, sound judgment and an ability to see the bigger picture.
The health and insurance sectors are also undergoing significant transformation, with increasing regulatory oversight, heightened community expectations and evolving risk profiles. That environment demands advisers who can adapt quickly and provide strategic, commercially focused guidance. Being part of that and helping clients navigate it with confidence is both challenging and rewarding.
I find the opportunity to mentor and develop the next generation of lawyers equally important. Building strong teams and supporting professional growth is a critical part of sustaining excellence in the profession.
My approach to client service is grounded in responsiveness, clarity and accountability. Clients value advisers who provide more than technical answers, they really do want practical, commercially relevant advice delivered in a timely and transparent manner form people who understand what is needed.
This understanding of each client’s operating environment, risk appetite and strategic priorities can’t be underestimated. That insight allows my team to tailor advice, manage matters proactively and provide considered and relevant solutions rather than just offering generic legal responses.
By maintaining close involvement across key matters and portfolios, I ensure clients receive continuity, strategic oversight and confidence that their matters are being handled efficiently and effectively.
Staying ahead in the health and insurance space requires constant engagement with legislative reform, regulatory developments and emerging jurisprudence. I invest significant time in monitoring industry trends and translating those developments into practical guidance for our clients.
Innovation also extends to how legal services are delivered. This includes leveraging technology to improve efficiency and reporting, adopting structured approaches to risk management, and ensuring the right expertise is applied at the right stage of each matter.
Within the firm, I encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing across practice groups and offices. That collective approach ensures we remain agile, informed and well positioned to respond to emerging risks and opportunities.
One of the most significant challenges has been establishing and scaling up a specialist health law practice in a competitive market while maintaining service quality and team culture. Achieving sustainable growth requires strategic focus, disciplined recruitment and clear leadership. At the same time, it is important to maintain focus on my clients and my busy practice.
I have addressed this by setting a clear vision for the practice, investing in high calibre people and maintaining close engagement with clients to understand their evolving needs. By combining technical excellence with a strong service ethos, we were able to build credibility, attract talent and grow the practice in a way that aligned with both client expectations and firm values.
That experience reinforced the importance of deliberate, people focused leadership in building successful legal practices, for me it is all about sound working relationships.
Over the next five years, my focus is on further strengthening Moray & Agnew’s health and insurance offering, ensuring it remains a market-leading practice trusted by major insurers and institutions nationwide.
Developing future leaders is also a key priority. I am committed to mentoring senior lawyers, supporting diversity and inclusion, and creating pathways for the next generation so that they can step into leadership roles with confidence.
More broadly, I will continue to contribute to the profession through thought leadership, industry engagement and collaboration, helping shape a legal sector that is both commercially focused and responsive to changing expectations.
