How did you start down this career path?

I grew up in Wagga Wagga, in regional New South Wales, within a migrant family. The experience of being part of a migrant family, of watching my parents establish themselves in a new country and build a life from the ground up, left a lasting impression on me. It gave me a firsthand appreciation for what it means to start again in a new place, while also at the same time able to see the economic challenges that Australia faces in the Regions.

I was raised with the ideology that one should help others, come to the table and contribute to society. It guided me toward a career where I could make a tangible difference in people's lives.

After being admitted to legal practice, I made the deliberate decision to focus on immigration and administrative law. Having grown up in a family that had gone through the migration process ourselves, I understood the weight of these matters on a personal level. That lived experience continues to inform the way I approach every client's case.

What inspires you in your role and industry? Why?

I am inspired by the direct impact our work has on the Australian economy and people’s lives. Immigration does not just concern people's livelihoods, their families, their futures but it serves as a mechanism of business productivity in Australia. When we secure a positive outcome for a client, it carries real consequences for that individual and for everyone connected to them.

I am also inspired by the global nature of this work. As an Australian-Pakistani who was born in England, who grew up in Wagga Wagga, I have always felt connected to more than one part of the world. Our firm reflects that outlook. We have strategic alliances in the Gulf and South Africa, and I regularly speak in Africa and the Middle East on behalf of various organisations. That international dimension keeps me engaged and constantly learning. It reminds me that migration is a global conversation, that the movement of people has always been a part of human nature,

and the work we do in Australia connects people, capital and opportunity across the World.

What’s your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?

Every client who engages our firm receives attention that is both personal and thorough. We do not operate on a volume model. We take the time to understand each client’s circumstances, their goals and their concerns before we create a strategy.

Our team at Rehman Sheriff Group brings expertise in immigration law, government departments and compliance advice, but we deliver that expertise in a manner that is clear, direct and free of unnecessary jargon. Clients should feel informed and empowered at every stage of their matter, not overwhelmed.

We also place a strong emphasis on responsiveness. In immigration matters, timing is often critical. Our clients know they can reach us when it matters, and that their concerns will be addressed promptly and with care.

How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?

Immigration law in Australia is one of the most dynamic and frequently amended areas of legal practice. Staying ahead requires deliberate, ongoing investment in professional development, legislative monitoring and industry engagement.

At our firm, we maintain a proactive approach to regulatory change. We do not wait for legislative amendments to take effect before adapting our advice. We anticipate shifts, track proposed reforms and ensure our clients are positioned accordingly. This forward-looking mindset is particularly important for clients investing in Australia, where visa pathways and compliance obligations can change with little notice.

What is the toughest challenge you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

The toughest challenge has been building a law firm from the ground up while simultaneously expanding across multiple jurisdictions. Becoming a partner of my firm in Melbourne was a milestone, but establishing a branch in my hometown of Wagga Wagga and then expanding the business overseas required a different kind of resilience.

For someone who didn't grow up with a financial safety net or a family legacy to fall back on, the stakes were never abstract. Every decision carried real weight, and failure was never just a professional setback but a deeply personal one.

Each expansion brought its own set of complexities, from understanding local regulatory environments to building trusted relationships in new markets. There

were moments of uncertainty, where I had to sit with the discomfort and push forward anyway, because giving up was simply never an option I was prepared to take.

What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?

I intend to deepen the international presence of our firm, particularly through our existing alliances, while continuing to strengthen our domestic practice in Australia.

I am also committed to expanding our community engagement. I plan to conduct more seminars and talks at schools to inspire the youth of today. I want to formalise that commitment further through structured programs and partnerships.

Professionally, my ambition is for the Rehman Sheriff Group to be continued to be recognised as a leading firm in Australian immigration and administrative law with a global reach. We have laid the groundwork, and the next phase is about building on that foundation with the same discipline and integrity that brought us to this point.
