Amir Vojdani, Director of Vojdani Lawyers on the Gold Coast, specialises in Property and Commercial Law, advising clients across Australia and internationally.
How did you start down this career path?
My path into law is closely tied to my family’s story. My parents fled Iran due to persecution for our family's adherence to the Bahá’í Faith, where believers are systematically denied higher education and opportunities. Seeking a better future, my family came to Australia, rebuilding their lives in a society grounded in fairness and opportunity.
Growing up with that background instilled in me a deep appreciation for access to justice, equality before the law, and the legal system's role in protecting individuals. This naturally drew me to law, not just as a profession, but as a way to contribute to a system that upholds fairness and supports people in navigating complex decisions in their lives.
Over time, I developed a particular interest in property and commercial law. I was drawn to the practical, tangible nature of the work, structuring complex licensing agreements with major international brands, guiding property developments and master-planned estates, and bringing ambitious projects to life. That blend of personal values and commercial focus has shaped the direction of my practice at Vojdani Lawyers.
What inspires you in your role/industry? Why?
What inspires me most is working on matters that have a tangible outcome. In property and commercial law, you are often involved from the very beginning and see projects come to life over time, whether a large-scale development, mixed-use project, or significant acquisition. There is a strong sense of satisfaction in helping clients navigate complex issues and seeing those projects progress from concept through to completion.
I also enjoy the strategic nature of the work. Much of what we do extends beyond purely legal advice and involves understanding commercial objectives, managing risk, and finding practical solutions that allow transactions to proceed efficiently. Acting for developers, financiers, and commercial clients requires a clear appreciation of how legal frameworks support broader project delivery, particularly in areas such as off-the-plan developments, leasing, and financing arrangements.
Another aspect that keeps me engaged is the constant evolution of the industry. Property and commercial law are continually shaped by legislative reform, market conditions, and shifting client needs. The need to stay ahead of these changes, while continuing to deliver clear and commercially focused advice, is both challenging and rewarding, and is a key part of what drives me in my role.
What's your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?
My approach is centred on being responsive, clear, and commercially focused. Clients are often dealing with time sensitive transactions and complex issues, so they need advice that is not only technically correct but also practical and easy to act on. I focus on giving direct guidance that allows clients to make decisions and keep matters progressing, rather than overcomplicating issues.
A key difference in my approach is that I focus on anticipating issues early, such as identifying risks and disclosure hurdles under the new Property Law Act 2023, before they become ‘deal-killers.’ Addressing these matters proactively helps avoid delays and gives clients greater certainty.
I also take a consistent and relationship driven approach. Many of the clients I act for are involved in ongoing projects or multiple transactions, so it is important that they know what to expect in terms of communication, turnaround, and outcomes. That reliability, combined with a focus on practical solutions, is what has led to strong long-term relationships and repeat work.
How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?
Staying ahead in this area requires a strong focus on both legislative developments and how they apply in practice. I make it a priority to remain across changes in property and commercial law, particularly where reforms impact how transactions are structured or delivered. By conducting formal educational presentations, for example, to real estate agents and other key stakeholders on the Property Law Act 2023, I take an active role in helping set the industry standard rather than simply following trends.
Innovation in my practice is often about improving how work is delivered. Across property transactions and commercial matters, I have focused on refining contract frameworks and internal processes to ensure matters can be handled efficiently without compromising quality. This allows us to manage complexity and scale while maintaining consistency and accuracy.
I also see technology, including AI, as an important tool in supporting efficiency and quality. Used appropriately, it can assist with document management, consistency, and turnaround times, allowing more time to be spent on higher value strategic advice. Combined with ongoing engagement with clients and industry participants, this ensures that the advice we provide remains practical, relevant, and aligned with current market conditions.
What is the toughest challenge you've faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
One of the more challenging aspects of my role has been managing complex transactions that span multiple jurisdictions and areas of law. This has included large-scale property matters in different states, as well as transactions involving specialised areas such as agribusiness, carbon sequestration, and renewable energy. These matters often require navigating different legislative frameworks, regulatory requirements, and commercial considerations simultaneously.
In addition, I have worked on commercial transactions involving international licensing and the global distribution of physical hardware with counterparties such as Microsoft Corporation, Ferrari S.p.A. and Sony Corporation. These matters introduce a further layer of complexity, requiring an understanding of cross-border legal considerations, intellectual property rights, and differing commercial expectations. Managing these transactions requires careful coordination and a clear approach to aligning legal advice with the broader commercial objectives.
I address these challenges by taking a structured and disciplined approach: breaking down transactions into key components, whether that involves the technical titling of a property development or the regulatory hurdles of a commercial transaction, ensuring a deep understanding of the relevant legal frameworks, and working closely with stakeholders to maintain clarity. By focusing on practical solutions, I have been able to manage complexity effectively and deliver outcomes that support my clients’ objectives.
What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?
Over the next five years, my focus is on continuing to grow a specialist practice in property and commercial law, particularly in acting for developers, financiers, and commercial clients on complex and multi-jurisdictional transactions.
A key priority is continuing to refine how we deliver our services. As transaction volumes and complexity increase, it is important that our systems and processes evolve to maintain efficiency, consistency, and quality. This includes further integrating technology where appropriate and ensuring that we are able to deliver commercially focused advice in a timely and practical manner.
I am also focused on developing the team and strengthening long term client relationships. Building a practice that is both technically strong and commercially aware requires investing in people, creating opportunities for growth, and maintaining a high standard of service across all matters. More broadly, I aim to continue positioning the firm as a trusted advisor in a changing regulatory and commercial environment.
