The scrapes some former law students manage to get themselves into continue to amaze Folklaw...

A former law student in Wisconsin in the US was arrested earlier this month after allegedly holding up a credit union.

Randall H. Hubatch (great name!) was charged with armed robbery in relation to the morning robbery of Summit Credit Union in the state’s capital, Madison.

So far, not that exciting. However, this was not your regular stick-’em-up...

As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal, Hubatch was ‘armed’ with a plastic toy Star Wars gun, which he kept in his pocket. What really made this alleged robber stand out though was his choice of head gear – a Bucky Badger hat.

Bucky Badger is the mascot of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hubatch’s alma mater and the institution from which the now 49-year-old graduated with a law degree in 2004.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that, according to the criminal complaint, Hubatch told cops he wrote a note demanding $500 from the teller, saying he asked for $500 because he didn’t think the credit union would care about such a small sum and would simply give it to him.

Hubatch said he had $250,000 of student loans to pay, so $500 would not make much of a dent in that...

According to the complaint, Hubatch, who also claimed he is “slightly autistic” and diabetic, told cops: “If the district attorney agrees to send me to prison for a long time, then I will confess and plead guilty ... otherwise, I have nothing else to say, and if released I will do it again.”

Hmm, well the alleged criminal would want to try for bigger amounts if he plans any future robberies, otherwise, if he plans to pay off that debt, he would have to “do it again” 499 times...
