From Bonegilla via the Victorian Bar to Melbourne’s Government House, the Hon MrChernov is a former chairman of the Victorian Bar, vice president of the Australian Bar Association and president of the Law Council of Australia, and is currently the Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

“We congratulate [Chernov] on his appointment,” said the current Victorian Bar chairman, Mark Moshinsky SC.

Chernov, Victoria's 28th Governor, came to Australia as a 10-year-old boy fleeing war-torn Lithuania after the advancing Red Army killed his father.

“From migrant beginnings in Australia, arriving as a child with his parents in 1949, [he] has had a strong commitment to education and the law. He is well known for his energy and good humour, and his prodigious ability for hard work.

“He has fostered the careers of numerous barristers, and inspired many law students. He is an excellent choice for Governor of Victoria and we welcome the appointment,” said Moshinsky.

Chernov joined the Bar roll in 1968 and was appointed a Queens Counsel in 1980. He was appointed a Judge of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1997, then the Court of Appeal in 1998.
