Judge removed for ‘petulant’ behaviour

A UK district court judge has been removed from office in the first judicial sacking in 26 years. The Office for Judicial Complaints has confirmed Margaret Short has been removed after an investigation into “inappropriate behaviour”, the Law Society Gazette reported. The former judge’s behaviour had been “inappropriate, petulant and rude” and she had been “intemperate and ill-judged with regard to another”. The judge has taken annual leave when she was asked not to, failing to hand over court documents upon request, and failing to exercise sound judgement when responding to complaints. In 1983, Judge Bruce Campbell was removed for smuggling alcohol and tobacco on his private yacht.

Yale ranks best US law school

Harvard and Stanford have had to settle for lesser rankings. This year, Yale is the number one US law school, US News & World Report claims. The rankings coincidently align closely with the fees, with Yale asking for an annual tuition of US$46,000 ($64,550). Columbia University comes in close second in terms of cost, with US$45,674 a year fees, but ranks only fourth in terms of quality, according to the US News report. Weighing up quality and cost, in-state students at the University of California, Berkley get the best deal, ranking tie sixth with the University of Chicago, but costing US$11,000 less with annual fees of US$30,944.
