QUEENSLAND-based firm Carter Newell Lawyers has launched a compliance guide for the aviation industry, the first of its kind in Australia.

The firm has a two-partner aviation team, including Paul Hopkins and Glenn Biggs, which acts for general aviation carriers, public and private airport operators and insurers, predominantly in aviation insurance.

The Australian Airports Liability and Compliance Guide reviews the relevant legislation, case law and applicable penalties that relate to the operations for Australia’s primary and secondary airports.

Julieanne Alroe, recently appointed CEO and managing director of Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), said that as airports become more than just places to just catch planes, the law pertaining to the development of our aviation gateways is becoming increasingly important to the urban development of cities and regions.

“Having come from Sydney Airport, I have had a very direct and very instructive experience with many aspects of aviation law.”

Because of the slowing domestic and international travel market plans for some airport expansions have been put on hold, such as the $1.7 billion worth of work at Brisbane Airport. The BAC development was expected to be completed by 2012, but is now more likely to be finalised by 2014.

The guide is designed to assist airports and operational managers by providing guidance on various issues such as leasing and planning, major development or master plans, safety and security and environmental issues.
