NSW CROWN Solicitor Ian Knight has spent all but three years of his 36-year career in the Crown Solicitor’s Office.
He nominates retention and attraction of staff as high on his list of concerns. “While remuneration is quite good at junior levels, at the more senior levels we are not compeititive,” he said. “So we have to try to offer a better work environment, more interesting work, opportunities to go to the Bar and the judiciary — we hope we provide a good, sound training in the law.”
Maintaining a better work environment is a priority, Knight said. “And we do it in a serious way. We don’t ask someone to do five days work in three days, it’s a genuine part time situation.”
Knight’s role includes an abundance of varied and interesting work: “Each day you get to see history being made,” he said. “You don’t appreciate it until some time after that that was a significant moment you actually saw or participated in.”
