Two key groups working to deliver pro bono and sustainability outcomes have formed an alliance.
The Australian Legal Sector Alliance (AusLSA) and the National Pro Bono Resource Centre (NPBRC) have announced that they intend to work together to achieve shared objectives.
From 2016, sustainability profiles for law firms will indicate whether each firm is a signatory to the NPBRC’s Target of at least 35 hours of pro bono legal work per lawyer, per year.
By the following year, the reporting will indicate if the firm met the target for that financial year.
AusLSA has been organising the reporting on environmental sustainability for law firms since 2010.
This year the group decided to expand the scope of reporting to include social sustainability issues that consider people and the community.
The NPBRC collates information about the pro bono efforts of around 11,000 lawyers. In 2007, the organisation set up the National Pro Bono Aspirational Target.
