A senior environmental lawyer from Baker & McKenzie has been named chair of the Victorian Government’s committee reviewing climate change legislation.
On Thursday (4 June), Victorian environment minister Lisa Neville announced an independent review of the Climate Change Act 2010 to “propose options to strengthen the Act”.
Mr Wilder is also a director of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, chair of the NSW Climate Change Council, governing board member of the Renewable Energy Efficiency Partnership, a director and governor of the WWF and director of the Climate Council.
He previously advised governments and financial institutions on “the design and implementation of climate change policy including the UNFCCC and Kyoto frameworks, the design of post-2012 legal frameworks and climate mitigation strategies.”
The other review committee members are Anna Skarbeck, the CEO of ClimateWorks Australia, and Professor Rosemary Lyster from the University of Sydney.
Ms Neville said the Victorian Government was committed to transitioning the economy to reduce emissions.
“Climate change is already happening and it is threatening to irreversibly affect our communities, our environment and our way of life,” she said.
“I’ve appointed a committee of climate change experts to provide timely independent advice and recommendations to government on the Climate Change Act.”
