Carter Newell Lawyers – the winner of Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards for dispute resolution and/or litigation team of the year in 2023 – has appointed Marc Walker (pictured) as the firm’s CEO.
The firm has said that Mr Walker “will work together with Paul Hopkins, who has been the firm’s managing partner since 2017 and now the chair of partners and its board, led by its chair, Antonia Mercorella, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland”.
He commenced in his new role yesterday (26 February).
He joins the Brisbane-based office with more than 20 years of experience in “operational, marketing, and business development leadership, spending the last seven years as chief operations officer of a national law firm”.
In his new role, the firm stated that Mr Walker “will focus on culture, recruitment, and business development, while continuing to lead and foster collaboration between both the partnership and management team. He will maintain his strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity at all levels of the firm.”
Mr Walker graduated with a bachelor of commerce, marketing and finance in 1995 at UNSW.
During his career, Mr Walker has held many titles at a variety of companies. He started his career as an account director at Draft WorldWide, transitioned to national relationship manager at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and then worked as a senior business development manager at DLA Phillips Fox. After that, he was also a director at Sparke Helmore Lawyers, head of business development and pricing at Ashurst, director at Johnson Winter & Slattery, and chief operating officer at McCabes Lawyers.
The news follows the firm’s promotion of Christine Tadros to special counsel and Christopher Peppel to senior associate in February, the elevation of Stephanie Levesque to special counsel and three to associate in late September 2023, and the advancement of a new special counsel, three new senior associates and three new associates in early July 2023.
Paul Hopkins, chair of partners at Carter Newell Lawyers, commented: “The firm has a proud 35-year legacy, founded on a very genuine culture that recognises and openly encourages workforce diversity, and respectful and professional behaviours at all times.”
“Exceptional client service is written into our DNA, and it will continue to form the basis of everything we do with a commitment to prompt, proactive and client-focused legal service.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Marc to the team, who will steer the firm into the future.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Mr Walker stated: “It’s a particularly exciting time to be joining Carter Newell. The firm has achieved tremendous growth, and I look forward to working with Paul, the board, the partners, and the broader team to continue this trajectory into the next stage.
“I’m excited about injecting my own unique learnings and experience while, of course, championing Carter Newell’s renowned culture and existing inherent strengths which have characterised its success over the years.”
