Melbourne-based boutique law firm Burch&Co has strengthened its leadership team with the promotion of an associate director and a senior associate.
Burch&Co has promoted two of its lawyers to senior leadership positions, a move the firm said underscores its “strong internal talent pipeline” and commitment to a “human-centred” approach to leadership.
Matthew Gasparini (pictured) has been elevated to associate director and appointed leader of the dispute resolution and litigation team, while Sean Carr (pictured) has been named senior associate and will co-lead the firm’s expanding Office of the General Counsel (OGC) practice.
In a statement, the Melbourne-based boutique law firm said the appointments reflect the “diversity of professional journeys” that make up its team.
Gasparini joined Burch&Co in 2021 after beginning his legal career in litigation at national firm HWL Ebsworth. Over the past four years, he has steadily progressed through the ranks, holding roles as associate and senior associate.
In his new role as associate director, the firm stated he will take on broader responsibilities, which range from “team performance, forecasting, and shaping the future direction of both the team and the broader firm”.
Speaking on his new role, Gasparini shared his enthusiasm for further developing the firm’s services, with a particular focus on deepening client engagement.
“Burch&Co offered me a different way to practice law, one that aligned with my values and let me be both pragmatic and human,” Gasparini said.
“As associate director, I’m excited to build on our team’s success and amplify our services across risk mitigation, pre-dispute strategy and litigation. We’re deeply engaged with our client community and ready to grow that impact.”
Carr started with Burch&Co in early 2024 and has since played a key role in providing legal support to “one of the firm’s largest, publicly listed clients” through the Office of the General Counsel practice.
Before joining the boutique firm, Carr began his legal career at international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, where he worked as a graduate and later as a solicitor in the commercial disputes team.
As a senior associate, the firm noted that he will “co-lead the OGC practice alongside founder Nich Burch, helping grow the team’s capabilities and deepen its integration with clients”.
“I’m excited to step into a leadership position within the OGC team,” Carr said.
“It’s a great opportunity to continue delivering exceptional, embedded legal support that truly aligns with our clients’ businesses. The OGC model is proving its value, and I’m looking forward to helping more clients realise its benefits.”
Nich Burch, founder of Burch&Co, welcomed the promotions and praised both lawyers for the values they uphold and the meaningful contributions they make to the firm.
“These appointments reflect the future of Burch&Co. Sean and Matthew are smart, grounded, and values-driven lawyers who lead with integrity. They each bring a deep commitment to client outcomes and to building teams that are capable, empowered, and forward-looking,” Burch said.
“I’m proud to see them step into these leadership roles. I am also proud that our firm has proved that having a human approach to the way our team works together and within our client community can bring great success for all involved.”
