A Sydney criminal lawyer facing kidnapping charges had his practising certificate immediately suspended.
Sylvan Singh, from Redline Legal in Parramatta, had his practising certificate for the year ending June 2026 immediately suspended.
According to the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner’s register of disciplinary action, the immediate suspension occurred because he was charged “with a number of serious offences”.
As reported earlier this month, Singh was charged with one count each of taking and detaining a person for ransom, causing grievous bodily harm, supplying a commercial quantity of drugs, and knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group.
Singh was granted bail at the Liverpool Local Court on strict conditions, including a $250,000 surety and an order to remain at his residence unless attending medical appointments.
NSW Police alleged the charges related to an incident on 23 November last year, when a 31-year-old man was approached by three men with baseball bats and bound with cable ties.
He was allegedly assaulted and tortured at a St Mary’s property.
Police said the alleged victim’s brother paid a ransom, but the man was not freed, and a second ransom was demanded.
The man eventually escaped and was treated for multiple injuries, including a black eye, cuts to his head, and hand wounds.
Following an investigation by the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, conducted jointly with officers from the state crime-focused Raptor Squad, Singh was arrested in Austral on 2 September.
