Tom Courtenay has joined Green Mortgage Lawyers (GML) from Gadens, bringing with him 15 years of legal experience and a decade of expertise within the banking and finance sector.

In his former position, Courtenay advised on complex commercial banking transactions across property, SME and structured lending.

Courtenay has advised banks and a large variety of non-bank and private lenders and borrowers on drafting, negotiation, review of transaction documents, and complex borrowing and lending structures.

His experience will further strengthen GML’s capacity to support lenders across property and development finance, business and SME lending, asset and equipment finance, SMSF transactions, and compliance and risk advisory as the market continues to feel the intensity of transaction complexity and regulatory scrutiny.

GML managing partner Craig Green said commercial lending transactions are becoming “more complex, more scrutinised and more time-sensitive”, which demands “senior judgement at scale”.

“Tom’s appointment reflects our disciplined approach to building a commercial banking team with the depth of experience required to support lenders operating in this environment.

“We are highly selective about the talent we bring into the firm, and Tom brings the calibre, technical judgement and commercial insight that materially strengthens our commercial offering.”

Courtenay said GML is a firm with “one clear focus, one highly aligned team, and a deep specialisation in mortgage lending”.

“That clarity creates real strength,” Courtenay said.

“The scale of the team, combined with specialist systems and experienced practitioners working together, allows GML to manage increasingly complex commercial lending transactions while remaining highly [responsive] to lenders, brokers and borrowers.

“It is a model that is purpose-built for where the market is heading, and it made the decision to join a very compelling one.”

Over the past 18 months, GML has grown from 150 to 170 professionals and has expanded its commercial and technology-enabled legal services.
