Melbourne-based personal injury law firm Henry Carus + Associates has reached a significant milestone, marking 25 years of service to the Victorian community.
Henry Carus + Associates has reached a 25-year milestone, having spent a quarter of a century representing injured Victorians as they navigate the compensation system and recover from serious injuries.
Founded in 2001 by principal lawyer Henry Carus, the firm has grown from a small practice into a mid-sized legal operation, now employing more than 60 staff across legal, administrative, and client support roles.
Before founding the Melbourne-based personal injury practice, Carus spent a decade working as a trial lawyer in New York City before relocating to Melbourne, where he later gained experience within the Transport Accident Commission system as a legal adviser.
While acknowledging how significantly personal injury law has evolved over the past 25 years, Carus said the firm’s focus has remained largely unchanged, even as the systems and processes surrounding it have continued to shift.
“Personal injury law is ultimately about people whose lives have been significantly disrupted,” Carus said.
“Over 25 years, legislation, processes, and technology have changed dramatically, but the need for clients to feel supported, informed, and genuinely cared for has remained constant.”
Reflecting on the firm’s journey, Carus pointed to the transformation driven by broader technological change across the legal sector, recalling the early days of practice when operations relied heavily on paper files and physical storage.
“When we first opened, office walls were lined with physical files and folders, and we even relied on external storage sheds to hold archived documents,” Carus said.
“Today, our systems are fully digitised, with technology and AI tools improving efficiency and helping our team deliver faster and more responsive client service. Watching that evolution firsthand has been remarkable.”
The anniversary has also highlighted the contribution of long-serving staff, with head of finance Oksana Bezsmertna and executive assistant Heike Otte Teasdale both recognised for more than 15 years of service at the firm.
Over the past quarter century, accessibility has also been a key area of change, with the firm expanding beyond its original English-speaking client base to now operate with staff fluent in more than a dozen languages, supported by interpreter services where required.
Carus also shared that remaining independently owned after 25 years remained a point of pride, adding that despite the firm’s growth, it had deliberately worked to preserve the close, individual attention to clients that has shaped its identity since the beginning.
“Remaining independently owned after 25 years is something I am incredibly proud of,” Carus said.
“We’ve grown significantly, but my team and I have worked hard to ensure clients still receive the individual attention and care that has always been central to who we are.”
