An Indonesian boy was, well, stung by his own prank after the repercussions of his mischief-making left him facing criminal charges last week, The Jakarta Post reports.

The boy, who is reportedly aged about seven or eight, is being tried at the Surabaya District Court in East Java. His crime? He placed a bee on the cheek of a female classmate as they returned home from school. After it stung her, her father filed a police report and the boy was accused of violating the Indonesian Criminal Code by "committing severe abuse that led to an injury".

The maximum penalty for this offence is a 32-month jail sentence.

The criminal age of responsibility in Indonesia is currently eight but there are proposals to raise this to 12.

Last year 10 shoeshine boys aged eight to 15 were found guilty of betting on games of heads or tails as they awaited clients at Jakarta's International Airport. They were held in a children's penitentiary for a month before being found guilty, but later returned to their parents after public outcry.

Folklaw presumes it was with a flea in their ear but probably not a bee on the face.
