Apparently, when combined with exhaustion, too much of the stuff can lead to insane behaviour.

As reported by Lowering the Bar, lawyers in Florida have argued a caffeine/exhaustion insanity defence, based on the case of Stephen Coffeen who confessed to killing his father in 2009.

Coffeen's team put forward the insanity defence based, in part, on the argument that a "combination of Red Bull and exhaustion" pushed him over the edge and led to a psychotic breakdown.

Although not the first time a caffeine/exhaustion defence has been used, Lowering the Bar points out that aside from calls for warning labels on soft drinks about sugar levels and the potential to make you fat, there may now be calls for warnings on energy drinks which warn you that you might just flip out and end up killing innocent family members.

Folklaw thinks that for someone with the name Coffeen, maybe the Red Bull defence isn't so far-fetched after all ...
