It seems that young American lawyers have had a gutful of hating their jobs and are trading them in for the pursuit of spiritual happiness.

And we don't know whether there is something in the air in Chicago, but a couple of disillusioned, high-achieving young lawyers have dumped their firms in a rather awesome way.

Above the Law reports that George Tyler Coulson recently pulled the rip chord on his firm, Sidley Austin, by sending around this sweet little departure email, with high importance: "Today is my last day at Sidley ... Beginning next week, I am walking from Delaware to California with a tent and my dog, Mabel. I will have limited access to email, but will check messages frequently."

Coulson's colleagues reacted to their firm's dumping like this: "The greatest reason to leave big law ever!" and "Coolest 'f--k you, I quit' email".

Above the Law managed to track down Coulson, who simply said: "I am really going to do this. I have always wanted to do an epic walk of some sort and now I am going to. The folks at Sidley are great, but big law just isn't right for me right now. I need to get out from behind a desk, I need to move around, I need to have an adventure, and I need to meet some people. It's too easy to forget who you are, sometimes."

It seems Coulson is not alone in his thirst for fulfilment, with 2008 Harvard graduate and Skadden associate Brian Emeott sending around this email earlier in the week: "Now that my time at Skadden is complete, my wife and I are relocating to Kathmandu, Nepal... Please be in touch."

The reaction was similar to that enjoyed by Coulson, with one lawyer emailing Above the Law with the following message: "Since I'm in big law myself and hate it like everyone else, I found [this] really interesting. Apparently, this guy just quit and moved to Kathmandu. No job, nothing. Him and his wife are 'finding themselves'. Super-ballsy but very, very cool. I wish I had the [courage] to do something like this."
