FOUR out of the twenty-two barristers who applied for Senior Counsel positions have been successful.

The Chief Justice of Western Australia, Wayne Martin, has announced the new appointments, which include Patricia Cahill, Matthew Howard, Anthony Derrick and Stephen Davies.

The Chief Justice was advised by a committee, which was chaired by himself, comprising the president of the Court of Appeal, the Senior Judge of the Supreme Court, the president of the State Administrative Tribunal, the Senior Judge of the Federal Court resident in Perth, the Chief Judge of the Family Court and the Chief Judge of the District Court.

Appointment as senior counsel is based on eminence in the practice of law, particularly in advocacy, unquestioned integrity, availability and independence, the Supreme Court of Western Australia said in a statement today.
