LAW firm Blake Dawson has launched a new employment law practice to cover South East Asia, and has hired former Freehills head George Cooper to lead it.

The news came just ahead of a merger deal this week between Blake Dawson and Britain's Ashurst. See the full story here.

Blakes has appointed Singapore-based Cooper as a partner in its employment practice. He leaves Freehills, where he has led its workplace law and advisory practice.

Cooper worked with major corporate clients in the resources, banking and various other industries on workplace relations strategies and solutions across the region, Blakes said.

He regularly deals with employment contract and policy reviews, termination and transfer issues and workplace risk management, and specialises in cross-border employment matters.

Cooper's appointment, from mid October 2011, comes as Blake Dawson's national Employment practice looks to build on the firm's regional presence in Asia. The firm has offices in Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo and Port Moresby, and an associated office in Jakarta.

Head of the firm's national employment practice, Richard Bunting, said: "We are delighted George is joining our team. He is an experienced and well-credentialed practitioner in Singapore and the surrounding region."
