HWL Ebsworth has made its 24th lateral hire for 2014 with the appointment of a Holding Redlich partner to its planning, environment & government practice in Brisbane.
Kelly Alcorn (pictured) joined HWL earlier this month (2 June). She is a planning and environment law specialist, servicing clients in the property, infrastructure and energy & resource sectors.
Speaking exclusively with Lawyers Weekly, Alcorn said negotiations with HWL “naturally evolved” out of existing relationships with partners at the firm.
She also claimed the ability to offer clients more competitive rates was one of the main motivations behind her move.
HWL managing partner Juan Martinez confirmed that the firm had invested heavily in its national real estate, building & construction and energy & resources teams in recent years.
Alcorn’s capture makes 24 lateral hires for HWL in 2014, including 14 partners in its Adelaide office as a result of the impending acquisition of SA boutique Kelly & Co – news broken by Lawyers Weekly in April.
Lawyers Weekly also exclusively reported in April that HWL had nabbed the head of Australian Business Lawyers & Advisors in Queensland.
A notable counterbalance to the firm’s lateral hiring record was the defection of cross-border insolvency expert Kon Tsiakis, who left HWL in Melbourne in May to join DLA Piper.
HWL Ebsworth has 186 partners and 425 other legal staff across offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Norwest (North West Sydney), Perth and Sydney.
