Justice David Porter’s retirement, announced this week, will take effect on 21 May. The government is set to start the formal search for a replacement.

His retirement follows a 32-year career in the legal profession.

During his career he held a number of roles, including chairman of the Medical Complaints Tribunal, president of the Australian Bar Association, the Law Society of Tasmania and Tasmanian Bar Association, editor of Tasmanian Law Reports, and director of the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course, as reported by the Mercury.

Meanwhile, Tamara Jago SC and Duncan Fairley were appointed as magistrates for the North West Coast this week.

The Law Society of Tasmania welcomed the appointments.

“Both Ms Jago and Mr Fairley will be excellent magistrates,” said Society president Matthew Verney.

He continued: “They are local to the North West and know the issues that are peculiar to the Coast. They also both have diverse and valuable life and practice experience which will equip them well as Magistrates.”

Mr Verney added: “Whilst the Society had hoped for the appointments to be made sooner, it acknowledges that the Government has moved as quickly as it could, taking into account the recent holiday period, to make these appointments.”
