Ms Cormann (pictured), the newly elected president of the Western Australian Law Society, has indicated that her tenure will focus on advancing and improving the issue of diversity in the profession.

Elected unopposed in the law society committee elections for 2018, the senior associate who works at Clayton Utz earmarked diversity as one of the top priorities for her tenure.

“Among other things, I am committed to the advancement of diversity in our profession, the development and success of our community legal sector, and to working constructively with government and other stakeholders towards achieving a national legal services market underpinned by a uniform regulatory system,” Ms Cormann said in a statement released by the Law Society.

Perth barrister and incumbent WA law society president Alain Musikanth said that his successor is an outstanding choice for what could be, at times, a demanding and challenging role.

“Having worked together closely on the Law Society council and executive for several years [with Hayley], I have every confidence that she is exceptionally well-suited to the task of continuing the excellent work which the Law Society does both on behalf of the Western Australian legal profession and for the benefit of the wider community,” Mr Musikanth said.

Ms Cormann’s term as president will commence on 1 January 2018.

The Law Society elections also saw Greg McIntyre SC and Jocelyne Boujos elected unopposed as vice presidents.

“I am delighted to have been elected president of the Law Society and look forward to leading further positive development and change on behalf of our membership and for the benefit of our profession and community,” Ms Cormann added.
