The legal body has welcomed Federal Circuit Judge Steve Middleton to the North Queensland community.

In his new role Judge Middleton has been transferred from Newcastle to replace long-time Townsville local Judge John Coker, who has stepped down to become a judge of the Queensland District Court.

QLS president Ken Taylor said the Law Society had consistently advocated for adequate court resourcing and will continue to work with the government on appointing the best professionals for each role.

“We are grateful to the federal government for this appointment," Mr Taylor said.

“I would also like to thank and acknowledge other Federal Circuit Court judges who have filled the position between Judge Coker’s retirement from the bench and Judge Middleton’s proposed commencement.

“I congratulate Judge Middleton on his very well-deserved appointment and he will be a welcome addition to the North Queensland legal landscape.”
