Phillip Boulten SC and Gregory Sirtes SC have been appointed to the Supreme Court of NSW, with the Attorney-General’s office describing them as “two of Australia’s most experienced barristers”.

Starting his legal career almost 50 years ago, Boulten was called to the Bar in 1988 and elevated to senior counsel in 2003.

He has handled complex trials and appeals covering serious offences, including bribery, corruption, espionage, drug trafficking, money laundering, and homicide.

In addition, Boulten previously served as president of the NSW Bar Association and has been a longstanding member of the Law Council of Australia’s criminal law committee.

After being admitted as a solicitor in 1990, Sirtes was called to the Bar in 1992 and later appointed senior counsel in 2008.

Sirtes’ practice encompasses a diverse range of matters, from property and family law to construction, commercial disputes, insurance, professional negligence, and estate litigation.

In addition to his civilian practice, he has served the Australian Defence Force as both a judge advocate and a Defence Force magistrate.

Both appointments will be formalised next year, with Boulten to be sworn in on 3 February and Sirtes on 5 February.

Attorney-General Michael Daley praised the appointments, highlighting the barristers’ extensive courtroom experience and dedication to justice.

“Mr Boulten and Mr Sirtes come to the bench with a strong track record of advocacy and wealth of courtroom experience,” Daley said.

“The appointments are a testament to both barristers’ skill, professionalism and commitment to serving the people of New South Wales.

“They replace retiring Justices Stephen Rothman AM and Peter Garling RFD, who have served on the Supreme Court for more than 35 years combined. I thank them both for their distinguished service to the community.”
