Originally reported in the Canberra Times, Ms Loukas-Karlsson took to the bar in 1989 and was appointed senior counsel in 2012.

Throughout her career she has worked for Legal Aid, the Aboriginal Legal Service, and the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, and appeared as counsel in a wide range of criminal trials, sentences and appeals in the District Court, the Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeal in NSW, as well as in the High Court of Australia, according to the publication.

In addition, Ms Loukas-Karlsson has been recognised for her career efforts, having taken out the Barrister of the Year Award from the Women Lawyers Association of NSW last year.

ACT Law Society president Sarah Avery congratulated Ms Loukas-Karlsson on her appointment, noting that the Society is happy to have someone of her calibre on board.

“I have worked with Ms Loukas-Karlsson on the Board of Directors of the Law Council of Australia, and I offer her my warm regards and sincere congratulations,” Ms Avery said.

Her deep understanding of social justice, and her work with Legal Aid and the Aboriginal Legal Service, will bring valuable experience and perspective to the bench.

“The Society and its members look forward to working with her in the future.”
