Atanaskovic Hartnell has made a former Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom lawyer a partner at the firm.

JAMES Wheeldon has been appointed as a partner of Atanaskovic Hartnell.

Wheeldon joined the firm as a special counsel two years ago, and has since worked on a range of transactions in M&A, corporate and commercial.

Wheeldon, who has practised law in both Australia and the United States, was a member of the AH team advising Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board in connection with its unsolicited $13.8bn consortium proposal for the acquisition of Transurban Group.

He has given strategic advice to offshore hedge funds in connection with the restructuring or recapitalisation of listed entities.

Wheelson has represented the former CEO of an ASX 100 listed company in connection with matters arising from the company’s collapse, and has provided general corporate advice on a wide range of governance issues.

The new partner kick started his legal career in the mergers and acquisitions group of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in New York City, where he advised on high profile transactions, including a number of unusual cross-border deals.

Following his return to Australia, Wheeldon worked in the Regulatory Policy Branch of the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC), where he provided policy advice on matters relating to regulation of financial services and capital markets.
