Victoria Bar Council senior vice chairman Jonathan Beach QC has been appointed as a judge to the Federal Court of Australia.

Federal Attorney-General George Brandis QC announced Beach will be appointed to the Melbourne registry of the Federal Court, replacing Justice Julie Dodds-Streeton, who resigned on 1 April.

Beach was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria as a solicitor and barrister in 1984. He worked as a solicitor with Blake and Riggall in Melbourne from 1985 to 1987.

He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999.

His experience includes administrative, commercial and corporations, energy and resources, and trade practices law.

He has served as a member of a professional standards committee of the Victorian Bar Association since 2010.

Beach begins the new role on 30 June.
