A partner in Norton Rose Fulbright’s commercial practice has defected to Maddocks along with a team of lawyers.

Greg Hipwell (pictured), an experienced retail and franchise lawyer, has been appointed to Maddocks’ intellectual property and technology group. Senior associates Jessica Rowe and Elizabeth Stary, and lawyer Mira Guirguis, have also made the move to Maddocks from NRF.

Mr Hipwell, Ms Rowe and Ms Guirguis will be based in Melbourne, while Ms Stary will join Maddocks’ Sydney office.

A partner at NRF for 14 years, Mr Hipwell acts for manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers within the automotive, outdoor power equipment, fashion, hair and beauty, consumer finance and food and wine industries.

He has positioned himself as a competition and consumer law specialist, particularly in relation to pricing, supply and market conduct issues, the franchising code of conduct, intellectual property licensing and the development of channel distribution networks.

NRF partner Stephen Giles will continue to lead the global firm’s consumer markets and franchising practice.

Wayne Spanner, managing partner at NRF, commented: “In recent years, Norton Rose Fulbright has successfully attracted many high-quality lawyers to the firm. Occasionally, some of our staff leave to pursue other opportunities. All firms experience this.”

Over the past two months, NRF has gained and lost a partner in Perth.

In January, Derek La Ferla, NRF’s former corporate advisory team leader, defected to Lavan Leal.

A month later, NRF recruited real estate partner Andrea Rezos from Ashurst.
