Prue Bindon becomes the second female president in the history of the ACT Bar Association after being elected earlier this month.
Upon her appointment, Bindon said: “It is a privilege to lead the ACT Bar Council, and I am grateful to the outstanding barristers who are volunteering their time to serve on council. I look forward to continuing the great work of our immediate past president, Brodie Buckland.”
Joining Bindon at the helm are vice president Beth Morrisroe, secretary Katrina Musgrove, and new treasurer Ben Jullienne.
The five newly elected council members are Sarah Baker-Goldsmith, Anca Costin, Keegan Lee, Athol Opas, and Anthony Williamson SC.
As former vice president of the council, Bindon will be taking the reins from Buckland, who will remain on the council for the next 12 months as immediate past president.
In a statement, the council said: “Ms Bindon is only the second female president in the history of the ACT Bar Association. The first, Justice Rebecca Curran, was elected in 2022 before her appointment to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1).”
Bindon was called to the ACT Bar in 2016 and has diverse experience spanning commercial law, administrative law, discrimination, human rights law, inquiries, and professional discipline.
She spent her legal career at national and international law firms, including King & Wood Mallesons and Linklaters in Hong Kong.
Also a contributor to the legal community outside of her practice, Bindon is a board member of the Legal Aid Commission ACT, chair of the ACT Bar equal opportunity committee, a member of the Law Council of Australia equal opportunity committee, and lecturer in Litigation and Dispute Management at the Australian National University law school.
Bindon said: “It’s encouraging to see that women now make up 50 per cent of the 10-member council, including three of the four executive roles. It reflects real progress in our profession and brings a welcome diversity of perspectives to the leadership of the Bar.”
