The watchdog, established in 2004, has made its latest appointment.
Following more than 40 years as a judge and counsel and 17 years on the Supreme Court, Justice Stephen Hall will commence his role at the independent, anti-corruption body on 1 July.
Justice Hall joined the West Australian independent bar in 1999, appeared as counsel in numerous trials and criminal and civil appeals cases, before being appointed senior counsel in 2003.
He has sat as a trial judge of the West Australian Supreme Court’s general division and as a Court of Appeal judge. As a judge of appeal, he was responsible for determining decision appeals from the Supreme Court, State Administrative Tribunal, WA Family Court, and WA District Court.
In addition, he heard numerous trials, including the high-profile and judge-alone trial of Claremont killer Bradley Edwards, as well as numerous cases of homicide, armed robbery, arson, sex offending, fraud, insider training, and drug cases.
His Honour previously assisted the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) as counsel, as well as for the Royal Commission into the Finance Broking Industry and the police royal commission.
He was most recently a senior assistant director in the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and will retire from the bench this month in preparation for the new role.
On the appointment, Attorney-General Dr Tony Buti said: “Justice Hall’s extensive experience in handling complex trial matters will enhance the CCC’s ability to investigate allegations of serious misconduct and corruption in the State’s public sector.”
“His Honour’s distinguished service in the legal profession as a Supreme Court judge, a barrister, and a prosecutor across four decades makes him entirely qualified for his new role.”
Justice Hall will be replacing the Honourable Michael Corboy SC, appointed as commissioner at the end of 2025 after initially serving as deputy and then interim commissioner.
