The firm’s regulatory consulting business is designed to fill the gap in the market with advisers that have both in-depth legal and technical expertise from regulatory, firm, and professional services background to provide strategic and practical advice to clients, a statement said.

Allen & Overy Consulting’s Australian practice will give clients advice on improving regulatory relationships and their regulatory remediation programmes, as well as providing the scope and scale necessary to deliver tailored business outcomes, the firm explained.

Heading up the new practice will be Lee Alam, joining Allen & Overy Consulting from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, where he was the general manager of global regulatory affairs.

As part of this role, he was responsible for managing the CBA’s regulatory approach and change projects throughout AUSTRAC proceedings, the APRA Inquiry, and the banking royal commission.

Prior to this, Mr Alam was a managing director of JP Morgan Australia, where he was responsible for the initial design and rollout of its global culture and conduct risk program.

He has also worked for the UK’s principal financial services industry regulator and ASIC.

Allen & Overy Sydney’s managing partner Jason Denisenko said that “the establishment of this new advisory discipline in Australia is timely in the post-royal commission environment of increased regulatory scrutiny.”

“Our clients have asked for a broader advisory capability to complement our market-leading legal practice, which will be answered through Lee’s expertise in regulatory affairs and conduct risk,” Mr Denisenko noted.

A&O Consulting’s CEO Sally Dewar said the practice was “excited to have someone of Lee’s calibre join the team”.

Ms Dewar was hired as the global lead and CEO of A&O Consulting at its September 2018 London launch.

She said “A&O has extensive experience and market-leading legal expertise in financial services regulation in Australia which when combined with this new capability will enable the firm to meet client demand for broader high-quality bespoke business-focused advice.”

“A&O Consulting complements the firm’s existing legal services and broadens the firm’s role in managing clients’ regulatory risk and supporting control enhancement and remediation projects,” she outlined.
