Hogan Lovells expands Australian practice with new oil and gas specialist

Hogan Lovells has appointed a new partner from MinterEllison to the firm’s finance practice on 11 May 2020, based in the Perth office.

Paul Shillington will be joining as a partner and has held private practice and executive roles in Switzerland, Paris and Perth, most recently with MinterEllison.

Commenting on Mr Shillington’s arrival, global head of the Hogan Lovells finance practice Matthew Cottis, said: “Pauls arrival represents the latest step in our plan for the building out and strengthening of the Australian practice which is an increasingly important and attractive region for the global energy and resources sector.”

Mr Shillington is an oil and gas specialist with more than 20 years experience acting in the energy and resources sectors on both transactional and regulatory aspects of deals. 

His practice focuses on providing clients with advice and assistance on asset acquisition and divestment, private M&A, JV arrangements, development activities and the strategic management of associated disputes. 

He had been involved in the energy industry since 1999 when he joined Coflexip Stena Offshore (now TechnipFMC) as regional counsel for the Asia-Pacific region. He was then an external legal adviser to ExxonMobil dedicated to its Greater Gorgon LNG development project. 

Mr Shillington established an energy-focused legal consulting business in Paris in 2008, and then moved to Geneva in 2011 to undertake the role of chief legal officer and corporate secretary of Oryx Petroleum Corporation Limited, a TSX-listed African and Middle Eastern-focused E&P company.

Mr Shillington’s experience includes working with, and in, challenging legal jurisdictions, and with both private and public companies, high-net-worth individuals and governmental agencies and ministries. 

He has an established track record in working as a member of and an adviser to management teams, and advising boards of listed public companies.
