Kylie Elizabeth Downes QC has been appointed to the Queensland registry of the Federal Court and will commence on August 2.

Ms Downes will replace Justice John Reeves following his retirement. She was admitted as a barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1992. She was appointed senior counsel in 2008, before commencing as Queen’s counsel in 2013.

She has specialised in commercial practice and has particular experience in contractual disputes, insolvency-related disputes, banking law, mining law, company law, joint venture disputes, construction disputes and intellectual property matters.

“On behalf of the Australian Government, I congratulate Ms Downes on her appointment and thank her for her willingness to serve the people of Australia as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia,” Attorney-General Michaelia Cash said in a statement.
