Bernie Walrut (pictured), who has been a partner at NRF since January 2020, has joined Ashurst in its Sydney office.

Mr Walrut’s practice covers restructuring, insolvency and special situations with a focus on transactional work in the private capital market, Ashurst said in a statement, noting that he acts for insolvency practitioners on contentious administration or liquidation matters, including recovery actions, and has advised on a number of significant insolvency disputes in Australia.

“With experience acting for clients including private equity funds and their specific portfolio companies, as well as significant alternative capital providers and major banks, Bernie will complement Ashurst’s already market-leading restructuring offering,” the firm said in a statement.

Ashurst head of restructuring and special situations in Asia-Pacific James Marshall said: “Bernie is an impressive restructuring lawyer with a strong client focus, and he will be a welcome addition to our team.

“His work for private equity funds, hedge funds and credit funds means he is well-placed to service some of the most active segments of the restructuring market currently. His practice will add to Ashurst’s top-rated existing offering and continue to strengthen our expertise across the market.”

Mr Walrut added that he is excited to join Ashurst’s “renowned” team in this area.

“I look forward to working with the team to provide top level service to clients in Australia and abroad. Ashurst’s global reach and commercial outlook are of particular appeal and provide a significant opportunity to continue to grow and expand my practice,” he said.
