Effective as of this month, Emma Gruschka has been appointed local managing partner (LMP) of the Sparke Helmore Newcastle office, and Matthew Hawker has been appointed LMP of the Sparke Helmore Brisbane office.

Ms Gruschka is an experienced workplace lawyer who advises on employment and work health and safety (WHS) issues for clients in diverse sectors, including mining, transport, financial services, insurance, healthcare, and government.

She is a young partner, the firm said, having been promoted to the partnership in 2021.

Mr Hawker will lead the Brisbane office through its next stage of growth and first joined the partnership in 2017. He also leads Sparke Helmore’s national government administrative law service line and advises on and represents Commonwealth agencies, licensees and insurers in merits review and judicial review matters.

“A huge thank you to partners Alan McKelvey (Newcastle) and John Toigo (Brisbane) for their contribution and leadership during their time as LMPs,” the firm said in a statement.

“They have always put the culture of their respective offices and the health and wellbeing of staff first, particularly through the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.”

This follows similar news from Allen & Overy, which named a new managing partner for its Perth office last week.
